Wallasey had a friendly away fixture against Wirral A.C. last Saturday, but with the Liverpool & District championships in view the running in both races was not up to the usual fast standard, thus avoiding the risk of unnecessary injury.
The boys and youths ran a combined race over three miles, Ron Barlow winning in 18 minutes, followed by T. Woodhouse, Wirral, and Roy Shaw, Wallasey, both in 18 mins. 1 second. The remaining counters were Peter White 4th and Ken Tunstall 6th, giving Wallasey 14 points, to win against Wirral's 2nd, 5th, 11th and 12th places for 30 points.
The juniors and seniors also ran a combined race with D. F. Cunnington, Wirral, returning 33 minutes 54 seconds over the 6 miles. John Winrow was Wallasey's first man home in 6th place in 35 minutes 31 seconds; Dennis Kelly 7th and Alan Clarke 8th each in 35 minutes 42 seconds. Hugh Pritchard was 14th in 37 minutes 15 seconds for a total of 35 points, Wirral thus winning the team event with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places - 10 pts.
Roy Parry meanwhile travelled with the Cheshire team to Epsom for the inter-counties championship. On a very heavy course, which was three laps of the 'Derby' course and 800 yards of the straight - Roy found the going too hard, and after a plucky attempt finally dropped out after 5 miles. Cheshire finished 16th out of 34, and it is interesting to note that with six runners under 21 they were one of the youngest teams entered.
Members are reminded of the international championships, March 27th at Birmingham. Inclusive cost (coach fare and meals) £1. Anyone interested in travelling should contact Mr. R. E. Hubbard, 44 Tollemache Street, Wallasey.
