Lingham Park, Moreton, will be the scene of Merseyside's main sporting attraction today.
The new cinder track will be formerly opened by His Worship the Mayor of Wallasey at
2 p.m. the occasion is the 9th Annual Cheshire Championships, and spectators will have the opportunity of seeing such stars in action as Wallasey's L. Platt in the high, long and hop step & jump, M. Wamsley in the 1 mile, (who incidentally is running for the A.A.A. in Helsinki next Monday), Brennan and Ashley, two strong contenders for the 100 yds. title, and I. Keith (holder), (G. L. Critchlow (of Oxford) and A. G. Day (Northern Junior Champion) who will be amongst the starters for the 440 yds, while in the 3 miles a strong field will fight it out with such well known competitors as J. Wild (holder). P. Smith, J. Lancaster, H. Clayton and Wallasey's J. N. Wright (now studying at Loughborough College). All in all, an event not to be missed.
Last Monday evening, Wallasey Athletic Club were entertained by Southport Athletic Club and the visitors were narrowly defeated by 46 points to 32. Much could be said against the running track and events laid before us. However it will suffice to report wins for Wallasey by R. Barlow 880 yds., R. Smith, shot, and C. W. Gee in the discus, while Southport's overwhelming numbers told in the other five events resulting in wins for them. A vote of thanks must go to Marie Downey our sole representative from the ladies section), for competing very gamely in the high jump and 100 yds, in which she was placed 3rd and 2nd respectively, but where were the Southport ladies when Marie's strong event (the discus) should have taken place? Alas! Nowhere to be found. I am sure the return match will be an interesting one, with the scales tipped more in our favour.
In the University Athletic Championships held at Manchester last Saturday, P. Price (now at Nottingham University) scored a notable victory in the 220 yds. (time 26.7 secs.) and ran second to M. Francis in the 100 yds. As a result of this fine effort by Penny she has a place in the Combined Universities' team v Combined Services in London today.
Well run, Penny! and all the best for this afternoon.
C.W.G.
