Most Wallasey Athletic Club members have a rest from competition until the New Year when the championship part of the season comes into full swing.
Some of the female members were involved in a cross-country league fixture last Saturday and some of the schoolboys were involved in a schools fixture.
Saturday, December 20th is the date set for the athletic club's annual Christmas handicap race. All club members are invited to run the 3¼ mile race for an entrance fee of a prize valued around 25p which ensures that everybody wins something. First home gets first choice of the prizes on the table. Every member has a chance of winning the race as runners are sent off according to their ability, the weakest first and the strongest around 12 minutes later.
The course is the same for everyone with last years winner, Neil Tunstall, hoping for another victory although the female members are convinced that this year it's their turn for victory.
Interested parties might like to know about the coming cross-country championships. The first two are at Arrowe Park. They are the Cheshire Championships and the Liverpool & District Championships and will start from the area of the swings, near the hospital buildings, around 2 p.m. The Wirral Schools match, originally scheduled for the 10th, has been changed to the 17th at the Oval Sports Centre. Wallasey A.C. should, therefore, be able to field strong teams in the boys and youths races on the 3rd and 10th with the possibility of a team award in the boys race to add to the ones gained at the H.S. Finney relays recently.
