At the second Cosford door open meeting, it was personal best performances all the way for the Wallasey Athletic Club runners last Saturday.
Pete Jones was first on the boards running in the senior men's 800 metres. He finished a creditable third in one minute 52.2 seconds, his first time under two minutes indoors. He capped his day with an equally impressive 400m, finishing first in 52.2 seconds. Three seconds ahead of his nearest rivals.
Ian Mcleod, running for the first time indoors this season, ran in the 200m and 400m. He finished third in the 200m in 24.4 seconds and second in the 400m in 53.1 seconds. Both performances were pleasing but not quite as good as expected. This was probably due to lack of race practice. Kevin McGee and Rob Heap both ran in the 3000 metres event. Kevin had trouble with his spikes. His spike plate came loose during the race.
Despite this handicap, however, he was only seven seconds slower than his best ever outdoor performance of last summer's catholic school's international in Austria. Kevin started slowly and worked his way through the large field to finish fourth in eight minutes 39 seconds. Rob Heap wasn't so lucky, however. He had remained at home for the two previous days suffering with a mild form of 'flu. The heat of the indoor stadium took its toil and he was forced to drop out with breathing difficulties with only three laps to go. Had he finished he would have easily bettered his existing 3000m time. So the club's track athletes continue to improve.
Chris Preston was competing again in the shot. He wasn't so successful this time as he was last time, but he still managed to finish in seventh place with a putt of 12.25m.
A reminder to all club members that Saturday, December 16, is the date of the club's Christmas Handicap. It commences at 3 p.m. and changing accommodation will be at the Scout Hut in Twickenham Drive.
The next races the club will be involved in are the championships in January, starting with the Cheshires on January 6.
