Last Saturday, in wet and windy conditions, five of the younger athletes in the club travelled to Sherdley Park, St. Helens, to compete in an inter-club cross-country.
Rob Peckham running in the Colts finished 5th after a hard fought last ¼ mile, although he could have finished higher up if he hadn't let the leading group of five break away at the half-way stage. Mike Jones and Brian Henry were both in the next race and eager to improve on the 5th place of Rob.
Mike ran an excellent race and put in a lot of effort in the latter half of the race finishing fourth. Brian finished only a couple of places behind after seeming to be suffering in the heavy conditions. In the next age group there were not enough youths to make a full race, so they ran with the seniors. One Gary McEneany had to drop out due to an unfortunate accident.
J. Roberts ran an outstanding race to finish 13th senior home, 2nd youth. Both these youths plus Kevin McGee, Pete Jones and Doug Hanna are running in France next weekend. They stand a good chance of being well placed if they run to their capabilities.
The same weekend there is a men's cross-country league in Liverpool, and our girl's will be competing in the Merseyside Women's Cross-Country Championships. We should be well represented in this too, as we have four or five girls who should finish in the first four in their respective age groups.
This weekend sees the first of the indoor races at R.A.F. Cosford and Pete Jones will be travelling down to compete. He will be changing from country to the track. He plans to use this and other indoor open meets as a build up to the national indoor championships early next year.
