Alan Pennington, son of Councillor Pennington, of Wallasey, who has done so well at Oxford, has been awarded a full Blue as a freshman in his second term.
A runner of undoubted distinction, he has developed since he won the Public Schools Sprint Championship, and in the Inter University sports, he was first string in the 100 yards and quarter-mile, winning the first event in 10 1-5 seconds, while in the quarter he ran finely, losing narrowly to A. G. K. Brown (Cambridge) after a thrilling race. Pennington has been asked to prepare for the 100 metres and 200 metres in connection with the Olympic Games.
The final selection of the British team will be made after the championships in London in July. He set up a new Oxford track record earlier in the season when he covered the quarter-mile in 49 3-5 seconds.
