Last Saturday, two members of the Wallasey Athletic Club attended the I.C.I. sports at Northwich, and between them they were successful in winning three of the five open events on the programme.
G. K. Williams was first in the half-mile open handicap, clocking 1-54 1/6 off 72 yards. Good running by this promising half-miler, who also acquits himself so well over a cross-country course, B. O. Kivlin was successful in two events. In the high jump he cleared 5ft. 5ins. which together with his allowance of 7ins., made him an easy winner. In the 120 yds. hurdles, off seven yds., he won both heat and final in the good time of 15-2secs. A very successful afternoon's sport for these two athletes, of whom we will hear more in the future. Wallasey A.C. are competing in the Liverpool & District Athletic Field Events League and Track League. These meetings enable our local athletes to gain competitive experience under less trying conditions than those which apply at open meetings, and although usually encountering team difficulties, Wallasey has been able to fulfil all engagements.
This speaks highly for the versatility of our boys.
On Monday last, Wallasey A.C. was represented at Port Sunlight by the following team:- Messrs. B. O. Kivlin, J. Byrne, J. Rimmer, T. K. D. Murdoch, C. R. Hewson, A. Simpson, F. G. L. Molyneux, H. Lutas. P. McCabe and R. F. Hubbard, and between them they were successful in obtaining a good number of points, being second in the 220 yds. relay, 3rd in the half-mile relay, 2nd in the hop, step and jump; and gaining points in throwing the javelin, and putting the shot.
An up to date league table will be printed In the near future. Future engagements are at Leigh on the 3rd August and at Wigan on the 5th August.
Potential members enquiries to either hon. track secretary, B. O. Kivlin, 42 Clarendon Road, Wallasey or the hon. secretary R. F. Hubbard, 39 Beech Road, Birkenhead.
