For the first time in 40 years, since the Wallasey Athletic Club was formed, the scarlet and royal blue colours of the club were carried to victory in a Liverpool & District Senior Cross-Country Championship last Saturday.
John Edwards, four times champion of Wallasey, was the successful runner, and he gained a well judged and richly deserved win, covering the seven miles of snow-bound country in 37 minutes 44 seconds. There were 60 starters.
The victory was a popular one, for Edwards has worked hard in the interests of local athletics. He has been assistant secretary and secretary of the local club and is the present captain.
The Wallasey team was composed of G. K. Williams (21st), J. Cunningham (27th), Ron Hubbard (29th), B. O. Kivlin (31st) and R. E. Young, Jnr. (32nd) and finished fourth in the team championship. In the youths' race G. A. Walker, of Wallasey A.C., ran well to finish third to the brilliant Pembroke runner, G. Radcliffe, over three miles. Walker's determined running gained him the award made to the first man home of an unplaced team. D. Kelly finished 7th, Murdock gave a vastly improved performance in finishing 14th, and A. Simpson in the 21st position completed the team which finished fourth.
To-day, Edwards and G. Williams travel to Leamington to run in the National Cross-Country Championship over 10 miles, and next Saturday Wallasey A.C. visit Liverpool University at Wyncote.
