Promising start to cross-country season
The efforts of Wallasey Athletic Club were divided last weekend between Winsford where the boys were taking part in the Cheshire Road Relays, and Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, where the girls were having a battle over the country in the first of three Northern Cross Country League races.

Athletes put on a great display
Both sections of Wallasey Athletic Club had one of their most successful weekends ever in meetings at Leeds and Newcastle-under-Lyme. The men's section fielded a strong relay team in the annual Aeron Trophy relay race at Leeds. Dave Lockley ran a magnificent first leg, looming in second with a time of 11 minutes 8 seconds.

Margaret battles through
Wallasey Athletic Club's Margaret Ashcroft came seventh in an International New Year Race in South Wales on Saturday, despite an injured foot. Only a small team travelled to the Nos Golan races at Mountain Ash this year, but great hospitality was shown to them by the same family who took the team in last year.

Four competitors from the Wallasey Athletic Club took part In the boys' two-mile race at Winnington Park, near Northwich, recently. They were Dave Gray, who finished 18th; Lawrence Jones, 39th; Brendan Kelly, 41st, and Chris Devereaux, who came 42nd.

Pete Lewis shines at Cosford
Wallasey Athletic Club's Pete Lewis was one of the three local athletes who took part last weekend in the National Indoor Championships at R.A.F. Cosford. The meeting attracted many of the big names in British athletics; including Mary Peters, Mike Bull and, Ian Stewart.

Several younger members of Wallasey Athletic Club ladies' section took part last Saturday in the Cheshire schools cross-country championships at Tatton Park. It was also a triangular inter-counties event with teams from Staffordshire and Shropshire taking part.

Barbara joins national squad
Barbara Banks, of Wallasey Athletic Club, who was placed sixth in the National Cross Country Championships in Rawtenstall on Saturday, has won a place in the English athletic team which will be taking part in the International Cross-Country Championships in Gwent, Belgium, on March 17.

Wallasey Athletic Club were hosts to the Northern Veterans Athletic Club on Sunday for the annual six and a half mile road race. This year's entry was the biggest ever with more than 50 contestants. j

Athletic notes
Wallasey Athletic Club's only athlete in action last weekend was Pete Lewis, who scored a resounding victory in an 800m race at Stretford. His time of 1m 54.3 secs. was 6 secs. ahead of the runner-up. This was a tremendous pre-season performance for Pete, who is now captain of athletics at Birmingham University.
