On Saturday last the Northern Athletic Association Championships were held at Billingham, County Durham when only one representative from Wallasey A.C. competed.
However as Lett Platt was the person concerned, Wallasey made their presence felt as Len gained two brilliant victories the first in the hop, step and jump with a distance of 45ft. 3¾ins. and then later in the long jump with a personal best performance of 23ft. 6ins. Both were easy victories and he has now to compete in the A.A.A. Championships at the White City on Friday and Saturday next when he will meet the finest athletes in the country today irrespective of their nationality. We wish him luck and are confident that he will give an outstanding performance no matter whether he wins or not.
Today, Frank Ledward, a club stalwart of many years standing is competing in the A.A.A. Marathon from Windsor to Chiswick.
It is of interest to note, so far as can be ascertained from records, this is the first time Wallasey A.C. has had a representative in the A.A.A. Marathon.
Although Ledward is Wallasey's only marathon competitor, this summer he has received valuable co-operation in training from Ted Bollard and both these runners been covering distances of 15/20 miles quite regularly.
Ledward has recently competed in the Radcliffe 20 miles race me, but unfortunately had to retire at the 15 mile stage with badly blistered feet, but he was not slow in this respect as only 21 runners in a field of 51 completed the course.
An analysis of the recent Cheshire Championship results show that Wallasey A.C. gained 14 medals in the course of the the championships 4 firsts, 3 seconds and 7 thirds, this total being equal to the number of places gained by any other two clubs put together, whilst the figure of four places gained by the club gained them prime place in this respect.
Members of the club hold six of the county records, a performance which is only equalled by Wirral A.C. who also hold six. Between them the two West Cheshire clubs hold 50 percent of the records.
On Tuesday next, the club have a match with Waterloo Harriers at Barn Hey, Northern Road, Great Crosby. Competitors and supporters should meet at Liverpool Landing Stage at 6:15 p.m.
Training will continue on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at Leasowe Road Playing Fields were new members will be welcomed. Full details from hon.
