Len Platt, competing at the St. Helens Police Sports on Saturday last, forsook his usual events and turned to high jumping.
He astounded everybody by easily clearing 6ft. 1in., a height which was also cleared by Cummings of Liverpool Harriers only for both to fail at 6ft. 2in.
Platt gained the victory by virtue of his superior handicap of 7 against 6 inches.
Some idea of the merit of Platt's jump can be seen from the fact that two of the three British high jumpers at Helsinki failed at 6ft. 2½ ins.
John Prydderch competed in the inter-banks championships at Motspur Park and was successful in gaining fourth place in both the 100 and 200 yards which was a good afternoon's work achieved in good company.
On Tuesday evening Wallasey entertained Sefton Harriers at Leasowe Road losing the match by 61 points to 40 points.
The club championships commenced last Monday when attendances were rather disappointing.
The best performance was a good high jump of 4ft. 8in. by Margaret Collings, who was followed by Barbara Heaney with 4ft. 6in. and Jean Morris 4ft. 3in.
Roy Parry recorded a good effort in the junior long jump when he cleared over 18 feet, while John McGill won the junior short sprint.
The championships continue on Monday and Thursday evening commencing 7 p.m. when all are welcome.
