This Saturday sees the final meeting of the 1952 track season take place at Salford, the only Wallasey entrant being Len Platt who hopes to be selected to take part in the invitation short limit 100 yards handicap, in which many well known sprinters will take part. Platt will give the best to run on his present form.
Last Saturday the Wallasey Athletic Club concluded their championships at Leasowe Road, the best performance being in the senior long jump, Platt doing 23ft. 5ins. his third best of the season.
Bob Johnston was again successful in the senior six mile, winning comfortably from Alan Clarke and Ken Ledward. Platt cleared 5ft. 8½ins. in the high jump and Ray Owen won the discus with a throw of 109ft. 9ins., 7ft better than Carl Gee.
In the junior events Eric Maddock ran well to clock a 5-minute mile, while John McGill won the 220 yards from Ken Ledward, who later won the javelin event.
In the youth' 880 yards, Hugh Pritchard sprang a lead on Heygarth and Farrell and maintained it to the end, while Penny Price gained a victory in the ladies discus event.
The final results of the track and field events championships are as follows:-
Senior track champion, L. Platt; second, R. Johnston.
Senior field champion, L. Platt; second, R. Owen.
Junior track champion, E. Maddock; second, J. McGill.
Junior field champion, J. McGill; second, J. Corlett.
Youth track and field champion, B. Bird; second, R. Wood.
Ladies track and field champion, M. Collings; second, B. Heaney.
The awards will be made at the annual general meeting at the Roycroft Hall, Seaview Road, Wallasey on Thursday, September 18th, at 7:45 p.m.
This Saturday training for the cross-country season will commence with a run from headquarters commencing at 3:15 p.m.
On Saturday next the club will be represented by a team of six runners in a road relay race which is being staged in Birkenhead Park.
