The Club Championships held on January 9th saw some grand running when over 40 members took part in the four events.
The leading runners throughout the season managed to run true to form and win their races. The boys' was raced over 2miles, with Ron Barlow winning in 11 mins. 40 secs. closely followed by Ken Tunstall and F. Jameson.
F. Jameson won the sealed handicap run in conjunction with the race.
Roy Shaw finished first in the youth's-race over three miles, in 16 mins. 23 secs. Brian Woolford and Bill Farrell completed the winners with Ian McIvor winning the sealed handicap.
Roy Parry, following his success in the Cheshire Championships on January 2nd when he finished tenth in the Senior championship and was chosen 1st reserve for the County team won the junior race over 5 miles in28 mins. 57secs. Roy was however, hard pressed by Eric Maddock, and had Eric's an not been a little stiff following last week's injury, the result may have differed. Hugh Pritchard finished 3rd and also won the sealed handicap. The senior's over 8.5 miles, provided one of the finest races seen in Club Championships for many years. Dennis Kelly must be really thrilled at finishing 1st in 54 mins. 26secs. Alan Clarke was a very close second with Ramsey Hewson 3rd and winner of the sealed handicap.
Throughout the race there was little to choose between the first two runners. Alan Clarke led on the 1st lap over Bidston Hill but by the 2nd lap Dennis Kelly had managed to snatch the lead. Following a more or less pace-for-pace 3rd lap Dennis managed to pull ahead on the homeward stretch to win by 20 - 25 yards.
After the races Mr. C. Humphrey, Vice-President of the Club, presented the Challenge Cups and Medals to the winners and runners-up.
