Wallasey's results were quite pleasing in the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Championships on Saturday.
Ron Barlow ran well in the boys' event over two miles to secure third place, but he made the mistake of taking the lead from the start against the more experienced runner K. Cowan of Liverpool. Ron is a good runner for his age but as he has not yet the experience to enable him to dictate the pace of a race. He should be prepared to follow the sound advice offered to him by older members.
Ken Tunstall also ran well in his first 'competition' year to finish 9th. Tony Farell, 27th and Ted Davis, 30th were Wallasey's other counters for 69 points only seven points behind Waterloo in third place. Dave White and Ray Griffiths also finished the course in 34th and 37th place.
Roy Shaw was Wallasey's first man home in the youths' three miles event in tenth place. Brian Woolford 19th, Peter White 22nd, Ian Mclvor 27th, Bill Farrell 28th, and Brian Hamilton 32nd counted for Wallasey for a total of 158 points and fifth team place. Les Williams, Alan Nichols, Neil Arthur and Ray Wood also finished the course in 38th, 41st, 44th, and 46th places respectively.
The juniors, over five miles, secured 3rd place medals with Roy Parry 7th, Eric Maddocks 12th, John Winrow 13th, and John Waldron 14th for 46 points. Eric Maddocks ran well but was handicapped by an injured shoulder which prevented him using one arm.
Hugh Pritchard and Colin Harris ran well to finish 16th and 22nd but only four counters are needed for the junior event.
The seniors could not field a team of six so they just ran as individuals. Denis Kelly maintained his improved form by finishing 35th with Alan Clarke 40th, Jim Rimmer 48th, Ray Scammell 49th, Ramsey Hewson 50th.
Today there will be a club training run for all teams in preparation for the West Lancashire championships on February 13. All members are asked to be ready to start at 3 p.m. prompt.
