For the first time in some years Wallasey Athletic Club fielded and finished four teams at a championship.
It happened at Southport last Saturday at the Liverpool & District Championships. The teams though not outstandingly successful made their presence felt and red vests were to be seen in respectable places in at least two places.
The boy's probably the keenest section in the club finished only third after making a promising start. Ron Barlow soon moved into the lead and showed he is right on form by winning easily, with promising Tony Townsend running really well to finish third. Freddie Jamieson and Dave White in 23rd and 31st places ran well. They were followed home by eight boys who though they did not gain medals made sure that Wallasey was well represented in the race. They were: 38th, Tony Farrell; 50th, Brian Anthony; 56th, Don Carter; 58th, Tony McCabe; 60th, Ken Williams; 69th, Ray Harrison; 72nd, Tony Hooker and 74th, Phil Townsend,
The Youths also finished third after a hard race which took toll of our runners many of whom have had flu in the fortnight after the Cheshire. The first man home was Pete White in 5th position, followed by Ian McIvor 12th, Roy Shaw 13th, Brian Woolford 17th, Bill Farrell 23rd, Brian Hamilton 36th and Les Williams 37th.
The juniors did not win any medals but ran well all the same. The club's men were John Lynch 17th, a good run but one feels that he could improve even more, Ken Ledward 24th, Colin Harris 29th, who ran well and has improved a lot lately but could do better with more training, Hugh Pritchard 30th and John Ryan 31st. The club's last man home was Alec Lillie, but as he ran the first lap in only one shoe and the rest of the race in one shoe and one spike it is obvious that he will be running better this year.
The senior race over 7 miles was won by Ron Davies of Liverpool Harriers. The club's first man home was Dave Standfast 40th, who never seems to do any training but always manages to run well, Jim Johnson was 49th, who must be trained by his illustrious brother, Alan Clarke 54th, a big improvement, Jim Rimmer 57th, Ram Hewson 59th, far from last and running better this year, Ray Scammell 60th, our budding marathon prospect who seems to be thriving on the training judging from his finish.
Next week we have a club run from H.Q., Leasowe Road at 3 p.m. prompt. Anyone interested in joining the club should contact Mr. R.F. Hubbard, 44 Tollemache Street, Wallasey, or Mr. Woolley, 8 Bradman Road, Moreton.
