In weather hardly suited to long-distance running some sixty competitors set off from the St. George's plateau last Saturday to run 26 miles 385 yards round the outskirts of Liverpool in the Liverpool City Marathon.
Amongst these were three members of Wallasey Athletic Club competing in the team race and also in the Cheshire County Marathon Championship run in conjunction with the Liverpool race. These men, Ray Scammell, Frank Ledward and E. Davies had trained hard for the chance to compete in the race and the result is exceptionally pleasing.
E. Davies, a club member, now living in Wrexham, was the first man home in 34th position, a very good race: Ray Scammell, who like Billy McMinnis the present English champion, is in the R.A.F. also did very well to gain 36th place. Mr Frank Ledward who the club expected to gain the veteran's prize was forced to drop out because of extreme heat. This was unfortunate as he was running very well at the time and had covered 15 miles.
