The A. G. Nicholson Challenge Trophy for the Wallasey schools' cross-country championship was won for the eighth time in nine years last Saturday by Moreton Secondary Modern School.
Secret of success for the winners was tight packing at the front from the start of the race, and with six boys in the first eleven home, there was little doubt of the final result. As was expected Ken Poyning of Wallasey Grammar School, won the individual championship by quite a considerable distance with Gerry Williams of Moreton S. M. School second, and E. Sherlock of Gorsedale S. M. third.
The team race was won by Moreton with 20 points, Wallasey Grammar School were second with 37 points and Gorsedale S. M. School third with a total of 41 points. The first boy home from an unplaced team was Ron Williams of Sacred Heart School in sixth position.
It is interesting to note that four out of the first five runners are all regular club members. This is a very promising sign for the boys team and on this form they almost seem certain to gain a place in the county championship.
In the Youth Race, Ron Barlow won the individual title for the second year in succession. In second place was I. Finch of the Grammar School with Tony Townsend a very close third.
Today (Saturday) is the date for the Waterloo Road Race. The travelling arrangements for those who are competing are to meet at the Liverpool Pier Head at 1-45 p.m. prompt.
Anyone interested in joining the club should contact either Mr. R. F. Hubbard, 44 Tollemache Street, New Brighton, or Mr. C. W. Gee, 78 King Street, Egremont.
