Last Saturday the Liverpool & District cross-country championships were promoted from the Wallasey club's headquarters in Leasowe Road.
The boy's team missed the presence of Ken Poyning and Brian Anthony in the race. The individual winner of the race was B. Mills of Pembroke, and the team race was won by Pembroke with 13 points. Wallasey, with Gerry Williams 14th, Billy Morris 25th, Brian Shaw 31st and B. Wright 38th, finished in 5th position with a total of 108 points.
In the youth race Ron Barlow justified all the Wallasey club's hopes when he won the race beating the much fancied Vic Cowan. Cowan who runs for Liverpool Harriers was beaten also by W. Bennet of Wirral A.C. and could only manage to finish in third place. Tony Townsend ran a good race to finish in 10th position. The team race was won by Wirral with 74 points with Pembroke second and Liverpool Harriers third while we finished in 4th position.
In the junior race Ron Williams and Kevin Gilligan, both of Pembroke, ran together and finished together with Williams being counted as first home. Pembroke also won the team race. Brian Woolford was first home for Wallasey in 8th position.
In the senior race Ken Gates of Pembroke ran away from the rest of the field to win by several hundreds of yards. Pembroke also won the team race. John Lynch was first home for Wallasey in 40th position.
