The National Cross-Country Championships are being held today on the racecourse at Warwick. In addition to both youth and junior teams entered by the Wallasey Athletic Club three seniors are competing as individuals.
Speculation seems to be running high around Merseyside as to how Ron Barlow will fare against the Southern champion Haith of Thames Valley Harriers, who last year put up the fastest time for a British junior in a mile race, with 4 minutes 16.8 seconds and also the third fastest half-mile with 1 minute 55 seconds. These phenomenal times must, it seems, make Haith the favourite for the race, but although it is uncommon for a first year youth, to win the National, it is hoped this will not hold good, and that Ron will repeat the success of Alan Cocking two years ago.
Cocking, who hails from Bramley & District Harriers, will be trying for the individual honours in the junior race and it seems hard to imagine his being beaten. The North should it seems this year, be well represented in the international team chosen from the first ten runners in the senior race with Derek Ibbotson and Ken Gates to the fore.
The Wallasey Club's Jubilee Dinner will be held on Saturday, March 24 at the Sandrock Hotel, New Brighton. Members wishing to attend should forward their completed forms to the treasurer immediately.
Anyone interested in joining the club should contact Mr, R. F. Hubbard, 44, Tollemache Street, New Brighton or Mr. C. W. Gee, 78, King Street.
