Ron Barlow of Wallasey ran well in last Saturday's West Lancashire championships and, as usual, scored a, triumph in finishing first.
He has done this so often in the past year, that officials take it for granted that he will win. He now has to defend his Northern title at Morecambe on the 23rd February. Many other runners have done well in the club, but in Barlow's case, his is the best prospect ever.
The race started in drizzle and soon the ground appeared to resemble a mud bath. Barlow and Townsend, his club mate, set a cracking pace under the conditions and in the second lap Barlow drew away to win comfortably. Townsend was fifth due to a slight accident on the course, Dave White was 18th, a much improved performance, and P. Townsend 28th. Total points 45, gave Wallasey third team place. Blackpool were the winners with 86 points and Wirral, 40 points, second.
Peter White, who won the Southern Command Championship the previous Wednesday, is to be congratulated on his fine performance in the junior event in which he finished 6th. Two hard races over six miles each is a bit much for one week, but no doubt this will tend to build up a good amount of endurance for future races. Hugh Pritchard ran robustly in the senior event, and as an individual entry finished 35th.
