Wallasey Athletic Club gained third place in the Cheshire County road relay race run at Macclesfield on Saturday, May 9 over 20 miles split into six laps of 3 1/3 miles.
Wallasey's first runner, A. Townsend (16 minutes 14 seconds) handed over in sixth place to Dave White who pulled up to second (16 minutes 26 secs.), Phil Townsend, handicapped by an injured knee, did creditably in 17 minutes 3 seconds, and reserve Vince Bayliss struggled gamely through lap four. A storming lap in 16 mins. 18 secs. by Brian Woolford (who had travelled from Sheffield) pulled the club back again from sixth to third place, which was ably held by last man Pete White but he was too far behind to catch the two leading clubs - Macclesfield A.C. finishing two minutes clear of Sale Harriers, who were 1½ minutes up on Wallasey.
Carl Gee, competing in the Inter-Counties Championships at White City last Saturday, achieved his best-ever discus throw of 126 feet 7 inches, placing him 16th out of the 34 competitors. Another 15ft feet and Carl should get among the A.A.A. rankings.
With the club coaching scheme making steady progress, a third inter-club meeting to give the boys and girls some, competition is to be held next Thursday, May 28, versus Sefton Harriers, at 7:15 p.m. All competitors and club officials are asked to be present.
