Wallasey Athletic Club contested a match with Sefton Harriers at Leasowe Road on Thursday last week, and won by 43 points to 32. Some of Wallasey's performances were encouraging and by the season's end, competition for the club's championship should be very keen.
A. McArthur took the youth 100 yards event in 10.8 seconds, with W. Gregory third. The boys' high jump proved a conclusive win for W.A.C., in all three places. P. Stowell cleared 4 feet 6 inches for first place, I. Finlay second (4 feet 4 inches) and W. Gregory third (4 feet 3 inches).
The shot putt was a combined event for competitors of all age groups using the weights applicable to their group. H. Poulter was first with 37 feet 2 inches and M. Shepherd, a youth, second with 36 ft. 10, inches;.
Tony Booth, changing to the long jump won the event with a leap of 18 ft. 7 inches and Ray Owen was placed third,
Wallasey gained 2nd and 3rd places in the mile, Kevin Mather, coming back into form ran 4 minutes 42 seconds, with Bill Morris in close attendance only one second behind. Dave Duncan showed his usual determined running when winning the half-mile in 2 minutes 3 seconds.
To round off these fine performances, Wallasey took first and second placings in the boy's 80 yards hurdles. A. McArthur was first up in 11 seconds, and M. Shepherd a bare two yards behind in second place.
At the Highland Games held in Liverpool last Saturday, Carl Gee, returning to competition after three week's lay off, won the shot putt and was third in both the hammer throw and tossing the caber.
The Northern Counties senior and junior athletic championships are being held today at Fallowfield track, Manchester. On Tuesday evening at Wavertree Playground further heats are to be held for the Liverpool Parks and Gardens Championships.
