In the first of the Liverpool Parks and Gardens competitions held at Wavertree Playground on June 2 - won by Liverpool H. & A.C. - Wallasey A.C. were well out of the running for the inter-club championship.
Among club members' performances, Billy Norris was well up in the three miles and finished 7th in 15 m. 46.8s. A. McArthur ran well to gain third place in the youths' 100 yards, time 11.1s. Dave Duncan finished 7th in the youth 1 mile race in 5m. 2s.
Marie Downey competed in the women's discus throw and long jump gaining sixth place in each with a best throw of 65-ft 8-ins. and a jump of 12-ft. 9-ins. Astrid Van Hahn was 7th in the long jump, 12-ft. 2-ins.
Ray Owen competed in the javelin throw and was a last-minute substitute for the shot. Ray also gained 6th place in each event, Ray Wood managed 4th place in the long jump with 18-ft. 1-ins.
Matt Smith, making a comeback after three years, set up Wallasey's best performance by taking 2nd place in the high jump with 5-ft. 6-ins. Tony Booth, a new club member, was 4th with 5-ft. 4-ins.
The Cheshire County championships were held last Saturday at Helsby and Wallasey A.C. had their poorest representation at these championships for several years. But for Matt Smith taking first place in the high jump and a third place in the youths' 100 yards by A. McArthur, Wallasey would have had a blank day.
