On Saturday last, over 80 runners entered for a three mile road race as the opening run of the Liverpool & District Cross-Country season. All the Merseyside clubs were represented at the headquarters of Wirral Athletic Club, and a good race was thereby assured.
Wallasey's well known trio of John Wright, Pete White and Ron Barlow, soon worked their way to the front of the field, and
It was extremely gratifying to find these three runners finishing in the, 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the above order.
John Wright is obviously enjoying a return to his best form and Pete White's forward running augurs well for the future, whilst it is obvious that Ron Barlow also enjoying a welcome return to his best form.
Saturday's result reflected the extremely hard training that these three runners have put in over the past three months and it is hoped that other members will have due regard to this.
Perhaps even more heartening was the collective performance of Wallasey's supporting runners, notably Kevin Mather in 8th position whose stylish running will be a threat to the best if he can achieve the necessary stamina before the championship period in January.
Mather was closely followed by Phil Townsend, Brian Woolford, Brian Chalton and Billy Morris, all having places in the first thirty.
In the youth age group a jog across-country was concluded with a half mile break in which Dave Duncan showed a continuance of his track form in being placed a good 4th.
This afternoon a club run will be held from Headquarters and all members are asked to report by no later than 3 p.m.
On Saturday next the first of the Liverpool & District 'mob' runs it be held from club headquarters, there being races for boys, youths and combined junior and senior teams, the junior and senior event being a match which counts towards the Liverpool & District League Championship.
All hands will be required on this date. Applications for membership will be welcomed by hon. General secretary, Matt, Smith, 29 Beechwood Avenue, Wallasey.
