Wallasey Athletic Club competed last Saturday in the Stalybridge Road Relay where 45 teams were entered. Wallasey's team (in running order) was John Wright, Pete White, Ron Barlow and Brian Chalton, each runner completing a stage of 3¼ miles.
The race was won by Blackpool A.C., and Wallasey put up a magnificent effort in finishing 7th, leaving behind such redoubtable teams as Bolton, East Cheshire, and Macclesfield Harriers. The club's fastest leg was run by John Wright in 15 minutes 12 secs., with Ron Barlow close behind in 15 mins. 15 secs.
This augers well for next Saturday, as the club has entered a team for the 27-mile Road Relay at Southport, promoted by the Milk Marketing Board. Wallasey's team (six runners) must be fancied for a place in the first three this time, and if all run to form it will take a good team to beat them.
Good news for the field men is that sanction has been given for the club to lay two permanent concrete throwing circles at the Leasowe Road playing fields, will enable the throwing members to practice throughout the winter months for the track season next April.
The date of the annual general meeting has been fixed for Thursday, September 24 7:45 p.m. at Roycroft Hall, Liscard.
