Last Saturday saw one of the few remaining handicap meetings of the season the U.G.B. sports at St. Helens. Pete White ran into third position and John Wright fourth behind Lancashire's international Gerry North in the open three-mile event.
Brian Chalton in the half-mile returned 2 mins. 4 secs. some three or four seconds more than he is capable of. For the club athlete, the track season is drawing to a close and cross-country preparations are under way. Members are implored not to treat the next six weeks as a rest between seasons, but to 'graduate to the country' as soon as possible, so that they are racing fit by September 26 (our first club run).
Weight training sessions are being organised every Tuesday and Thursday evenings and members - of all sections of the club are invited to attend. This form of strength training is now popular and has been proved of benefit to athletes in many sports. We hope to see some of the track members down at the club this winter.
