English weather is noted for its variety and in contrast to the rainstorm of a previous week last Saturday proved to be one of the sunniest days yet much to the dismay of five club members who had entered for the A.T.E. open 10 mile race at Huyton.
Eighty or so runners set off on the two-lap course of 5 miles per lap and John Wright, Brian Woolford and Ron Barlow were soon well up with the leaders, while Brian Chalton and Billy Morris were running easily, twenty places further back. At five miles, Jack Haslam of Bolton United Harriers was leading, with John Wright in close attendance but the heat began to tell on some runners, both Ron Barlow and Billy Morris retiring at this stage. Haslam continued to increase his lead on the second lap and eventually finished in 49 mins. 40 secs. John Wright and Brian Woolford followed two minutes later in 4th and 5th positions with times of 51 mins. 36 secs. and 51 mins. 52 secs. respectively. Brian Chalton running as strongly as ever, finished in 26th place in 57 mins. 6 secs. to give Wallasey a total of 35 points and second place in the team race. Pembroke Harriers were first with 22 pts. Bolton third with 37 pts., and Blackpool fourth.
On the same afternoon Carl Gee and David Duncan competed in the Northern Counties championships at Manchester. Carl finished 5th in the senior discus event with a throw of 125 ft 6 ins. and David Duncan was 5th in the junior 880 yards final in 2 mins. 0 secs, after winning his heat in 2 mins. 6 secs. Earlier in the week he recorded a personal best of. 1 min. 59 secs.
