Three Wallasey A.C. athletes competed for Cheshire in a triangular contest at the Manchester University track at Fallowfield on April 28, when the university acted as hosts to Cheshire and Imperial College London.
With university championships held so early in the season it was expected that their athletes would have an edge of fitness and speed, and so it proved, with Manchester narrowly defeating Cheshire and Imperial College third. However, all the Wallasey athletes acquitted themselves well with Carl Gee and Brian Woolford achieving personal bests in the discus and 3 miles events. In the discus Gee won the event it a fine throw of 133 feet 11 inches with his action looking easy and relaxed throughout, he was never seriously challenged.
The three miles race was won by that fine international Ron Hill, with Cleaver (Imperial College) just beating Woolford on the run in for second place. Woolford's time was 14 minutes,
37 seconds, which was over 10 seconds better than his previous best.
Kevin Mather on this occasion competed in the half-mile, to put an edge on his speed, and although beaten by a yard or two by Tim Ashe (Sale Harriers) he recorded a creditable 1 minute 57.8 seconds. Other Wallasey athletes who have been active lately are John Young, who was a welcome contestant for Imperial College in the mile event and Ron Barlow and Brian Woolford, who last Saturday finished first and second respectively in a 5-mile road race against Pembroke Harriers.
