Three of Wallasey Athletic Club's runners, Ron Barlow, Brian Woolford and Kevin Mather, represented Cheshire last Saturday in a triangular cross-country match against Lancashire and Northumberland and Durham.
Run over a heavy three-lap course, and more suited to mountaineers than runners, the race turned out to be a great triumph for Lancashire the inter-counties champions. Right from the gun, their runners showed clearly at the head of the field, and by the finish they had the team race well in the bag, with their six counting runners in the first seven finishers, scoring only 24 pts. Northumberland and Durham finished 2nd with 72 pt., and Cheshire 3rd with 116 pts.
Ron Barlow was first man home for Cheshire in 8th position, followed by Brian Woolford in 17th place, and Kevin Mather finished as Cheshire's final counter in 31st position.
Last Saturday was also the occasion of the third league match at Wirral's H.Q., run over a seven mile course.
Wirral A.C. once again took team honours with Sefton Harriers second and Pembroke 3rd, Steve Rogers of Sefton was the individual winner, Wallasey, did not field a complete team, but their 4 individuals finished: John Young 47th, Dave Field 48th, Hugh Pritchard 52nd, D. Atkinson 64th.
In the youths' race, Peter Meldrum once again ran extremely well and finished in 2nd position, behind J McLaughlan of Sutton, Tony Parry finished 18th.
Today, several of Wallasey's runners travel to Leyland to run in the Ham Finney Trophy, Brian Woolford, who has been 3rd the last two years, should once again be well placed.
