In spite of excellent running by John Wright and Brian Woolford, it was a disappointing result for Wallasey's cross-country team in their first Mob run of the season, held at Woolton Woods last Saturday.
Once again, lack of depth of senior members prevented Wallasey Athletic Club from winning this match, and as in past fixtures there was always doubt until the last few minutes whether the club would even have a team. This is just not good enough, and although not too much emphasis should be placed on those early fixtures, the position does reflect Wallasey's weakness in 5th and 6th positions.
Last Saturday, with Ron Barlow again absent from the scene, and Tony Townsend still away at Loughborough, Wallasey had to wait until 77th and 84th positions for their last two counting runners. This nullified the good running of John Wright who, taking the lead half-way through the 5 ½ mile course, came home first with a lead of 70 yards over second man Brian Woolford. Kevin Mather, 11th, and Brian Chalton in 23rd position finished Wallasey's scoring effort.
Wirral A.C. won the team race with 106 pts., with Pembroke A.C. second (118 pts.) and Sefton A.C. third (154), Wallasey A.C. with 198 pts. finished fifth.
In the youth's race held over a three mile course, Peter Meldrum was first man home for Wallasey in 4th position, Mike Teehan finished 21st, Harry Amis 23rd, and Tony Parry 27th. There was no team race.
Today Wallasey field a strong team for Derwentwater 10 mile road race, while at the playing fields, Leasowe Road, J Wallasey Schools Cross-Country Championships, will be held, starting at 2:15 p.m.
