Wallasey Athletic Club won the Sefton Park Relay on Saturday for the second year in succession., They completed the 6x3½ mile laps in a total time of 93 minutes 7 secs. against 94 minutes 27 secs. by Wirral A.C. and 97 minutes 16 secs. by Liverpool Harriers.
The race was virtually a repeat of the recent Cheshire County road relay when Wallasey beat Wirral by 1½ minute except that on this occasion Wirral had their best runner Bennett available to give them a chance of turning the tables.
However, the Wallasey team proved well able to resist the challenge and Jenkins of Liverpool Harriers was the only runner from another club to figure amongst the five fastest of the day. Fastest leg was by Ron Barlow in 15 minutes 10 seconds, followed by Brian Woolford 15 minutes 13 seconds, John Wright 15 minutes, 18 seconds and Kevin Mather 15 minutes 22 seconds.
Wallasey 'B' team's best laps were by Dave Field and Mark Aldridge who both did 17 minutes 29 seconds, with Tony Parry doing 19 minutes 28 secs., Harry Amis 19 minutes 1 sec. Carl Gee 19 minutes 25 secs., and Ramsey Hewson 21 minutes 45 secs. With several recognised runners unavailable it says much for present club spirit that the 'B' team was completed by the inclusion of club coach Carl Gee and veteran Ramsey Hewson, who first competed in this race over 25 years ago.
Today there is a club run from H.Q. and next Saturday the club send a team to take part in the Derwentwater 10 mile race in which they scored a fine team victory last season.
