This afternoon, Wallasey Athletic Club is engaged in the first inter-club match of the track season at Wigan. The six club competition is between the hosts Bolton, Winnington Park, Cheadle, Winton and Wallasey.
Wallasey had a good chance of success with the 2 mile team race one of just 71 events on the programme in which the club seems to have a better than average prospect of winning. There will be events in all age groups for both male and female athletes and Wallasey will be taking a team of between 36 and 40. Those interested should contact Mr. Carl Gee about transport.
Last Saturday, four on Wallasey's athletes took part triangular county match between Cheshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. As expected, Yorkshire, always one of the strongest athletic counties, ran out easy winners with 155 pts. whilst Cheshire (74 ½ pts.), just beat Derbyshire (73 pts) in a close tussle for second place.
Ron Barlow put up the best performance by a Wallasey runner in coming third in the 3 mile event in 14 mins. 3.8 secs. behind Derek Ibbottson, Brian Woolford was 6th in 14:40 and Brian Chalton 8th in 15 mins. flat.
In the 1-mile, Kevin Mather had an indifferent race, finishing in 14 mins. 25.3 secs.
