Wallasey A.C. compete in their last track and field meeting of the season today at Warrington, and the strong competition expected from the five opposing clubs should bring out the best efforts on this fine track. There are still a few seats vacant on the coach leaving St. Albans Road, Liscard, at 1.0 p.m.
Last Saturday, Wallasey's international marathon runner, Brian Woolford, took 2nd place in the Middleton 15 mile road race behind North Staffs. Don Shelley, with Nunn of Longwood 3rd.
Brian as holder of this title had to concede first place to a great run by fellow international Shelley, who beat him by 2 mins. 32 secs., Nunn being another minute in arrears.
At last week's graded meeting, young middle-distance runner Barrie Smith once again set a personal best time for the mile when winning his heat in
4 mins. 50 secs., Barrie, who only started serious running in June of this year, has improved on nearly every outing, and when he has a winter's country work behind him should be someone to watch next season. Running in the same race were Les Watcham, who was consistent at 5 mins. 5 secs; young Ian Wilson, who, after a third place in the 100 in 12.2 returned 5 mins. 24 secs, in the mile for a personal-best; and Carl Gee, who was timed at 5:31.5.
Wallasey A.C., are to hold a training camp during September 18-20. As with former camps, this one will be held on the land club president John Edwards, who farms just outside Denbigh. The camp will be in the nature of a serious training weekend, and in this respect only those athletes who wish to work really hard will be welcome.
Three V.I.P. guests have accepted invitations - Maurice Herriot, the British steeplechase champion; Mike Williams, his junior counterpart; and their coach, Denis Watts, who, besides being chief National coach, will accompany the British team to Tokyo.
