Last Saturday's attempt at the World 10-mile record at Kirkby was doomed before it had startled. The strong cross-wind ruled out any chance of a new record being established although the strength of Hill's opposition ensured that it would be a fast race for the conditions.
At quarter distance Ron Hill (Bolton), and Gerry North (Belgrave), had opened up a good lead of about 40 yards. Jim Adler, world 30,000 metre record holder, fought back and was soon swopping the lead with Hill. Adler forged ahead to open up a comfortable lead but on the last lap Hill, running with great determination, put in a final burst to pull back a 15 yard deficit on they last bend and won on the line by a matter of inches. Hill's time, identical with Adler's was 48 minutes 56 seconds - over a minute outside the world record. Third was Gerry North in 50 minutes 9.8 secs., 4th, J. L. Rowe (Small Heath) 52 mins. 13.4 seconds, 5th R. Franklin 52 minutes 16.8 seconds, 6th Ron Barlow (Wallasey) 53 minutes 18.6 seconds.
