Wallasey A.C. had only one member, Ron Barlow, representing Cheshire in the triangular
contest with Yorkshire and Lancashire last Saturday at Huddersfield. He was running in the 3-mile
event, in which, the lead changed hands several times until the final 850 yards, when Derek Ibbotson showed that he a still to be reckoned with by striding away from the field to win in 14 mins. 25 secs. Ron Barlow was 2nd man home in 14:32.2 and Lancashire's Frank Reeves 3rd, 5½ seconds after him,
The poor times would indicate strong wind conditions for a match which was won by the home county Yorkshire, with 68 pts. to Lancashire's 60 pts and Cheshire a poor third with 98 pts.
As from next Thursday, at 7 p.m. and each consecutive Thursday night throughout the track season, Wallasey A.C. are to make use of the Lingham Park running track.
The surface is in a loose condition at the moment despite rolling, but there are hopes that a process of re-surfacing will take place in the near future, when respectable times should result from the improved conditions.
The Lingham track is a public one and is therefore open to public use, on payment of 6d. per session, so why not make for Lingham Park next Thursday? Not only will you be able to see future stars in the making, you may even feel the urge to have a go at one of the sixteen track and field events yourself. You can be assured of a cordial welcome.
The graded meetings start at Port Sunlight Oval next Wednesday evening. Here is an excellent opportunity to run in company, with athletes of one's own calibre from all over Merseyside. The meeting starts at 7:30 prompt and there is a nominal charge of 5d. per event.
