The Wallasey School Cross-country Championships brought a good turn out of young athletes to Wallasey A.C. headquarters in last Saturday's mild weather. The course was entirely across-country and the slippery going made is most suitable for the use if spiked shoes.
The junior boys race, with 61 athletes competing, was run over a course of 2 miles and produced some good running with only 9 seconds between the first four boys. The individual winner was Finney (Oldershaw) in 12 mins. 27 secs., closely followed by Atkins (Gorsedale) in 12 mins. 30 secs.; Thomas 3rd in 12 mins. 35 secs. And Williams 4th in 12 mins. 36 secs. Oldershaw were the winning team with their counters 1st, 4th, 6th and 15th, giving 26 points. Second were Moreton Secondary 3rd, 10th, 12th 14th giving 39 points.; and 3rd Gorsedale 'A' 2nd, 5th, 15th, 21st - 41 points.
The senior boys race was the largest with 62 runners, and covering a distance of 3 miles. The individual winner was David Lockley (St. George's and Wallasey A.C.), who ran well within himself to complete the course in 17 mins. Second boy home was Kay (Moreton Secondary) in 17 mins. 24 secs. and Les Watcham (Gorsedale and Wallasey A.C.) was 3rd in 17 mins. 45 secs. Team placins were: 1st, St. George's Sec. 1,5,10 and 16 - 32 points; 2nd Moreton, 2,11,12,15 - 40 points,; 3rd, Gorsedale 'A' 3,8,26 and 32 - 50 points.
The youths race, with only 11 runners, was run over 4 miles and was won creditably by Adamson (Wallasey Technical Grammar) in 22 mins. 50 secs., with Barry Smith (Wallasey A.C.) 2nd in 23 mins. 40 secs. and Alan Keating (Wallasey A.C.) 3rd, 23 mins. 59 secs.
Today (Saturday), Wallasey A.C. are hosts for the mob rub. Members of various clubs come along to compete over a 7-mile course - for the seniors - over Bidston Hill, the youths' race being about 4 miles and the boys' about 3 miles. The first race will start at 2:45.
Next Saturday, Wallasey A.C. are to compete in the H. S. Finney Trophy relay race at Blackpool. Members who are entered and able to go are asked to be at either St. Alban's Road, Wallasey at 11:30 a.m. or Birkenhead Park Station by 11:40 a.m. prompt.
The club will be open for normal training from about 2:15 p.m., and any athlete wishing to join will be very welcome.
Wallasey A.C. netball girls kept their unbeaten record last Saturday to win by 30 pts. To 6. To win the league the will have to beat Cadbury girls in a straight fight. Members are asked to support our girls and give them every encouragement.
