A number of the younger members of Wallasey Athletic Club were competing last Saturday in the Cheshire Schools Cross-Country Championships.
In the intermediate race Steve Walker was the first runner home for Wallasey in sixth position. He has been training extremely hard during the last few months and this fine performance qualified him for the Cheshire Schools' team to run in the English School Championships later in the year. The other Wallasey runners competing over the four-mile intermediate coarse were Paul Barrie (16th), Les Watcham (17th), Melvin Schless (28th), Philip Wealthy (32nd), Ian Wilson (93rd), and Peter Lewis (101st).
In the five-mile senior event Mike McNamee finished in 11th position. His reward for this achievement was selection, as reserve, for the senior Cheshire team.
David Jackson and Bobby Craig, both members of Wallasey Athletic Club, assisted Wallasey Grammar School to finish in third team place.
Today there will be a club run from the Leasowe Road headquarters it is expected that a number of sprinters will be down to train as the track season is now only two months away.
