Wallasey Athletic Club's Dave Lockley turned in a fine performance in last Tuesday evening's 1,000 meters steeplechase for youths at Kirkby Stadium.
Taking the lead soon after the start he ran away from the rest of the field to win on his own in 2 mins. 52.3 secs. which knocked 5.7 secs. off his personal best performance.
As Dave has had less than a half dozen races over the barriers this effort is all the more meritorious as he beat N. Tarry (Warrington) easily, and this runner has a 2 min. 52.2 secs, to his credit for a 7th national ranking.
Dave will have a further opportunity of increasing his ranking today in the meeting at Warrington, where his event is included in the programme.
At the same meeting Barrie Smith running in the 880 yards 'A' race put up a personal best performance with a sparkling 2 mins. 11 secs., which sliced 2.1 secs. off his best time, whilst in the 'B' race where youths and juniors combined. Alan Kin finished 2nd in 2 mins. .8 secs., and Johnny Jones was 4th, with 2:10 after a disastrous first lap of 66' secs., Les Watcham was 5th in 2:18.8 and Ken Roscoe made his first mark of the year with 2:25 for 7th place.
Mike Teahan continued his run of quality races by placing 3rd in the 440 yards in 53.3 and he
too is poised for something approaching 51 secs; in the near future.
