Of the twelve runners who took part in the weekend camp at Foel Glap Farm (Denbigh), six returned personal best times for the 3 mile hill course, three who were running this route for the first time recorded good times, whilst the remaining three were within 15 seconds of their best.
Dave Lockley put up the fastest time of the day with. 16 mins. 10 secs., which was 16 seconds down on his previous best time and personal-best and he was placed 10th on the handicap basis. Barrie Smith returned 16:20, which was plus 15 secs. on his best; and Ray Kay ran in a 16:30 on his first journey over this course.
Fourth man home was the improving Mike Teahan in 16:32 minus 1 min. 21 secs. on his last run.; whilst first-timer Mark Aldridge was clocked at 16:49. Both Dave Adair and Doug Hanna returned 17 mins. 07 secs., and although Dave knocked 29 secs. off his own best time, Doug eclipsed the field by taking 2 mins. 26 secs. off his last run.
Seventh on time but to the tape, young Melvyn Schless, on his first trip to Foel Glap, showed what good food, air, and exercise does for him by storming up the dreaded 1 in 6 hill, passing 4 runners in the process, down the other side and on to the finish in 17:58. He was followed home by Ian Wilson, who took 2 mins. 11 secs. off his best time, and Peter Lewis, who also removed 1 min. 43 secs. Last on time but 8th on handicap was Carl Gee, 19:54, and minus 9 seconds from his last run; one minute and forty-two seconds covering the full field-on handicap.
Wallasey A.C. promote the first of their inter-club cross-country fixtures today from their headquarters in Leasowe Road, and it is expected that apart from the local clubs taking part, the three Grammar Schools will also send teams along to swell the field. This should provide an opportunity for them to test their runners out against good-class opposition before the start of the cross-country season proper begins.
Members and friends willing to act as either stewards or markers will be appreciated and should report to the club house at 2:15 p.m. for the start of the first race at 2:30 p.m.
