Johnny Jones won the individual event in the William Weston Memorial Trophy race in last Saturday's Wirral Schools Championships, whilst competing for Wallasey Grammar School, his time being 13 mins. 12 secs.
This performance helped Wallasey to achieve second position in the final, school placings behind Calday Grange Grammar School.
Johnny has obviously benefited greatly from the evening training with Wallasey Athletic Club at Lingham Park in Moreton.
Other Wallasey runners who performed extremely well in this race (14-15 age group), were W. Sutton of Moreton Secondary School, who was third in a time of 14 mins. 27 secs., and S. Wilkins of Wallasey Grammar School, who was fourth in, a time of 14 mins. 27 secs.
The senior event was the race for the A. G. Nicholson Memorial Trophy (presented) - by an ex. president of Wallasey Athletic Club, over three miles. Wallasey Grammar School finished third, behind Ellesmere Port Grammar School and Calday Grange Grammar School. The best performance by a Wallasey Athletic Club member came from Mike McNamee, who finished in sixth position and was running for Wallasey Technical School.
In all, Wallasey athletes seem to have performed to an extremely high standard, runners and teams both being high in the final placings.
As most of Wallasey Athletic Club's younger members were competing at this schools meeting it was decided that the club championships which were due to be held last Saturday should be postponed, and the provisional date is now November 6. We hope that this early announcement will give ample time for club members to make arrangements so that they may all compete.
This Saturday the club is holding a Sealed Handicap. The handicap of each athlete will not be known until the end of the race and in this way it is hoped that the result will be as much a surprise to the winner as anybody else.
It is expected that each member competing should bring with him a small prize, e.g. a box of chocolates, to add further enjoyment to the day's competition.
