The thirteenth annual Waterloo Schools Road Races sponsored, by the 'Daily Post' were held in perfect, but cold, conditions. Wallasey athletes competed on behalf of Wallasey Grammar School.
In the colts race over 1 ½ miles, the only Wallasey Athletic Club athlete to finish the course was R. Martland, who ran very well in his first major race to finish 58th.
St. Mary's College had a double success in this race, winning the individual title in the person of B. Lyonnette and receiving awards in the team race. First team to finish was Corby Boys' School.
Dave Dutton of Ellesmere Port Grammar School won the individual title with a time of 15:48. First Wallasey man home was Keith Butler in 42nd position 2 mins. 24 secs. behind the winner.
Gary Little, making a welcome return to athletics after a two month lay off, finished 97th. The only other runner to finish was Mike Potter in 206th place.
Most of the Wallasey athletes competed in this two-lap race over three miles. At the end of the first lap John Davies of North Cheshire led from A. Holden of Preston, by the end of the second lap John Davies was a clear winner. Holden held onto second place, and Pete Shaw of Burnage Grammar School snatched third place.
Wallasey athletes finished in the following order:- Johnny Jones 8th, Steve Walker 15th, Phil Wealthy 48th. Mike Weatherilt 45th, John Horobin 77th and Nick Bowen 96th.
Wallasey Grammar School with four in the first 50, finished fifth in the team race.
In the Waterloo Mammoth 7-mile road race the only Wallasey Athletic Club athlete competing was Brian Woolford who finished well up 38th position. In another race held a few weeks ago Barrie Smith finished third, whilst competing for Ealing and Southall A.C., Barrie is probably one of the leading Merseyside juniors at the present time.
On Wednesday an enjoyable training session Is done at the Technical Grammar School Gymnasium; MossIands Drive. On Thursday the club visit's Lingham Track for speed triaining.
Interested parties will be welcomed.
