Last Saturday, Wallasey Athletic Club took part in the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Championships at St. Helens. In the youths' 3-mile race Wallasey took the bronze medals with a total of 116 points.
Dave Lockley finished fifth and Johnny Jones came 17th, while Steve Walker, having started slowly, battled it out with Mike Weatherilt whom he only just beat out of 20th position. Bob McCaig, who has been running well this new year, finished 26th with Phil Wealthy, who had to count as 27th.
The winning team was Waterloo with 53 pts., having Cahill first and Hughes second. Liverpool was second with 87 pts. and Warrington was placed fourth with a total of 122.
In the boys' event Wallasey was not so successful. Several runners were absent because of exams, so Wallasey could only boast two representatives in the 2-mile race. Colin Reiners was 25h, while Bob Brimage was 28th, Dutton of Wirral A.C. being the individual winner.
The senior event was won by Mike Turner of Liverpool, Cyril Leigh of Wigan finishing second, with his team mate R. McAndrew coming third and also gaining a gold medal for being the first junior home.
The winning team in this event was Wirral A.C. with 111 pts. Liverpool was second with 163 pts. and Wigan third with 219.
Wallasey was seventh with 422 pts. Brian Woolford continued to show the improvement which has been apparent recently by finishing seventh in the 7-mile race. Barrie Smith was the second man and first junior home for Wallasey in 32nd position, with Alan Keating only seven places behind.
Ken Rosso was 53rd, Mike McNamee was 60th and Len Durkin was 70th. Doug Hanna showed an improvement by finishing one place ahead of Mike Teahan in 80th position while Carl gee was placed 86th.
The Inter-Counties are being held today, so there will be a club run at 2:30 p.m. from the Club H.Q.
