Competing at Hartford on June 8th, Barbara Banks showed that she is on the verge of international class, when she comfortably won the Cheshire Women's half mile title, in a time of 2 minutes 26 seconds.
Another promising female athlete of Wallasey A.C., Carol Huston, was placed 2nd in one intermediate women's, long jump with a leap of 15ft, 4½ins., a championship best performance.
On Thursday evening, June 13th, Wallasey A.C. held a relay meeting at Lingham Park. Despite a very poor track, many notable performances were registered.
The women's half-mile must take pride of place as the most entertaining event. Only two competitors faced the starter and few people could have imagined the battle which was to ensue.
Jean Symonds, Cheshire Women's quarter-mile champion, stuck like glue to Barbara Banks of the home club. Entering the finishing straight, Jean edged past, but she did not reckon on the tenacious fighting qualities of Barbara, who stormed through on the inside to register a personal best of 2 mins. 20 secs.
In the boys' paarlauf Wallasey's Pete Moseley and Pete Martin teamed up to defeat a strong challenge from Christ College School. Wallasey also won the girls' 4 x 100 yards relay by some 50 yards.
Possibly the most interesting result was in the senior paarlauf in which Bob Warburton, first year youth, and Dave Lockley, second year junior, finished fifth.
Wallasey A.C. also finished second in the senior mile medley and senior two-mile team race, both behind Wirral A.C.
Wallasey A.C. boys' team finished second in their mile medley.
Perhaps, it was unfortunate for Wallasey that both youths events were cancelled.
The club's thanks must go to Ramsey Hewson, who presented the prizes, and Pete Hanna who fixed competitors up with numbers also to Mrs. Banks and company who helped with refreshments.
