David Lockley and Barrie Smith of Wallasey Athletic Club, both ran six seconds faster than ever before in a two-mile race at Kirkby last Tuesday. In a field of 21 runners Barrie finished 5th in 9 minutes 31 seconds and David came in only a couple of places back in 9 m 35s.
Alan Kin, at the same meeting finished 2nd in the 330 yards race in a time of 37.1 s and 3rd over 150 yards in 15.4 s. Both races were against good class opposition and Alan can be well satisfied with his efforts.
On the previous Saturday at Warrington, one of the Wallasey club's newly acquired field events men, Terry Leach, threw the youths' shot farther than ever before, finishing a good 4th with 36 ft 10 ½ ins. He completed a good day's competition by finishing 1st in the discus event with 134 ft. 1 in.
Some of the club's senior members have been attending a recent series of lectures in Liverpool on physiology as applied to athletics. The knowledge gained will lend a sound scientific basis to the more specific training that the club will attempt this year, with the emphasis on quality rather than quantity.
Over the past month a number of ex-members have rejoined the club with the intention of training.
