Wallasey Athletic Club were among the 23 starters last Saturday in the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union 6 x 3 miles road relay championship at Deer Park, Sefton Park, and Aigburth Vale.
Lying fifth in the earlier laps Wallasey had slipped out of the reckoning by the end of the fourth lap, 11th and closed in 12th, in a time of 110 mins.36 secs--B. Smith, 16:47; B. Woolford, 16:24; D. Hanna, 18:40; Alan Keating, 20:00 M. Teahan, 19:49; L. Durkin, 18:56.
Wirral 'A' won comfortably in 99.35, with Pembroke second 100.17; Sutton third, 100.34, and Liverpool fourth, 100.45.
Twenty-one teams out of the 23 starters closed in including Wirral 'D' all over 45 years of age.
The shortage of seniors and juniors in the Wallasey ranks is obvious at times when one or more of their top runners are absent. Ron Barlow absent on Saturday, would have raised the team to 9th or 10th place. The club has relied heavily on Barlow, B. Woolford and J. Wright in the past.
A very promising youths' team, however, should return Wallasey to their winning ways in a year or two's time when they reach the senior ranks.
