On Saturday, Barbara Banks proved that the improvement in her track times this summer was only an indication of better things to come. After leading for most of the ladies Cheshire cross-country championships she was only narrowly beaten on the run in by the reigning Ladies' Northern Champion, Jane Perry of Wirral A.C.
An example to many in the club, Barbara is now beginning to reap the rewards of consistent training and will have to be reckoned with at this year's Northern in February.
Meanwhile the club's senior men's team was contesting the H. S. Finney Championship. The race was a relay of four three mile laps, the first of which saw a not yet fully fit John Wright run extremely well to bring the club home into 7th place in a time of 15m. 32s.
He handed over to Brian Woolford who pegged back a place returning 6th in 15 m. 24s. Ron Barlow was next to go over the muddy, twist and turn course, and although not yet 100 per cent fit, recorded the club's fastest time of 15m. 16s. to hand over in 5th position to Barrie Smith who brought the club home in 4th position with a lap of 15m.19s.
The race was won by Blackpool from Sutton and Wirral in a field of 33 teams.
