Wallasey Athletic Club promote cross-country races for girls this Saturday at 2:30 when ten schools and an entry of 232 contest three races over the sandhills course recently used for the Wallasey schoolboys events.
The first race is for 1st and 2nd year girls over a one mile circuit and has drawn a mammoth entry of 140 runners. Schools from Liverpool, Chester, the Wirral and Wallasey are entered and local interest is upheld by Oldershaw Grammar School and Wallasey High who have, teams in all three races. The second event at 2:45 is for 3rd year girls and they have a one and half mile course to tackle. Wallasey's country champion, Sylvia Brimage, will run in this race and should be well to the fore as she knows the course although strong teams from Chester City High and English champions, Kirklands S.M. of Rock Ferry will be pushing for team awards.
The final event at 3:10 is for 4th and 5th year students and is over two circuits of the first race's one mile lap. A two-mile event is easy meat for regular runners but many of these girls will be tested over this course which incorporates grass, sand, cinders and roadway, in it's circuit. Changing rooms are at the club's H.Q., on Leasowe Road Playing Fields, whilst spectators can reach the course area by either Telegraph Lane or Green Lane.
Whilst most of her clubmates will be involved in the school races at Wallasey, club captain Barbara Banks, together with Margaret Ashcroft; will travel to Aldershot for the Women's National Championships and with Barbara coming back into form after her sojurn in Mexico. She could well surprise the more fancied runners from the South, Margaret is not nearly so fit as her partner but she too showed signs of improvement in the recent Northern championships and can expect to run well over the Aldershot course, which is not suitable for spikes.
