Wallasey Athletic Club had only two representatives at the inter-club track meet at Wigan last Saturday, yet between them they amassed enough points to take the senior club award.
The two, Alan Cheers and Brian McGraw, placed first and second in the 100 yards, second and third in the long jump and whilst Alan had an easy 440 yards win in 56 secs., Brian took the high jump with 5ft 6ins. Then the pair finished with a one-two placing in the high hurdles. Quite an afternoon's work between them.
The following day ladies' captain Barbara Banks and secretary Margaret Ashcroft travelled to Bolton for an invitation 3,000 metres track race. As usual Barbara did, most of the 'donkey work' out front and was just beaten to the line by Preston's Susan Carnegie, with Margaret in fourth place. Both girls had an off-form afternoon and were 20 seconds down on their best performances.
Whilst the girls were performing on the track, club coach Carl Gee took part in his first 'veterans' road race, over a 7½ mile course at Stretford and was placed 24th from 36 finishers in a time of 47 mins. 07 secs.
The first three home (all ex-internationals) were Sam Hardiker, Manchester, in 38-52, Fred Wrigley, Leeds, 39-23 and Jack Haslam, Bolton, 39-51.
Club members should note that the circuit training sessions restart at the Tech. Boys' gym on Monday next at 7:15 p.m. whilst the weekly track workout will now move to Wednesdays at the same time.
