As a result of the Cheshire Schools' Cross-Country Championships on Saturday, many Wallasey A.C. members were selected to run for the Cheshire Schools team In the National Schools Cross-Country Championships.
The course at Tatton Park, Knutstord, was rock hard and blanketed with a thin layer of snow, brought the best out of the Wallasey runners, whose training puts an emphasis on stamina.
In the senior boys' race, won by Nigel Gaynor (Sale), Bob Warburton ran into third place, working his way through the field during the five miles and pushing county youth champion David Allen (Moseley Hall G.S.) into fourth position.
As a result, Bob was selected for the Cheshire School team for the first time over the country, although he has run for them on the track.
Bob Brimage came in ninth, with Gary Fair 10th, both being selected as reserves for the Cheshire team. Roy McGurn was not up to his usual form and could only manage 20th place. These four helped Wallasey Technical Grammar School into second place behind Northern Schools Champions, Moseley Hall Grammar School. In the Intermediate Boys race, Peter Martin gained a Cheshire place with a well judged eighth place.
The Intermediate Girls' race saw Sylvia Brimage running into third place and Gillian King gaining Cheshire team place in the six miles. Lindsey Mutch and Susan Carter gained reserve places with 10th and 12th positions.
ln the junior girls' race, Susan Lloyd ran well to squeeze into the Cheshire team in eighth place. Gillian Ackers was disappointing, having to drop out with cramp.
