Two teams from Wallasey Athletic Club ran on Saturday in the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union's road relay championship at Sefton Park.
On the first competition of the winter programme, Wallasey athletes failed to do themselves justice. The 'A' team's lead off runner was Dave Lockley who returned home in 16 mins. 42 secs., well in touch with the leaders in 6th place, Dave Lindsey ran the second leg in 16:50 secs.
Club captain Barrie Smith pulled back a place in 17 mins. 39 secs. for the third leg as Sutton Harriers continued to command the leading position with great dominance.
Mike Whiteside ran the fourth leg finishing sixth in 18 mins. 7 secs., on the fifth leg Mike Teahan dropped to 8th place in 18 mins. 3 secs. and Phil Wealthy failed to improve that position with an uninspired final leg of 18 mins. 30 secs. with Sutton Harriers clear winners.
The same lethargic approach was evident in the 'B' team, Dave Hughes ran the first leg in 18 mins. 46 secs. Doug Hanna followed in 18 mins. 46 secs. for the second leg. Ian Wilson maintained the position in 20 mins. 35 secs. and Pete Lewis gained two places in 19 mins. 17 secs. Dave Adair ran the fifth leg in 19 mins. 56 secs. and John Lynch ran the final leg in 19 mins. 39 secs. to bring the team home in 15th place.
The club's annual general meeting was held at the headquarters last week when the standing Committee was re-elected in its entirety. Mr. C. R. Hewson was re-elected president for the fifth time, a fine tribute for the time he gives to the club. A mention must also be made of Mr. J. Edwards (chairman) and Mr. J. Prydderch (Treasurer) for the work they do behind the scenes which is not always appreciated by some of the athletes.
Potential new members are always welcome and should contact the secretary, Mr. D. Hanna, 9 St. Elmo Road, Wallasey, or coach Mr. C. Gee, 18 King Street, Wallasey, telephone no. 639 5129.
